Three Dead After Two Helicopters Collide at Oregon Airport

Three people died after two helicopters collided at McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon, according to officials investigating the crash.

The collision happened on October 29, 2026, at the airport located roughly 40 miles southwest of Portland. Local authorities and federal investigators responded to the scene shortly after the incident.

The aircrafts involved were a Robinson R22 helicopter and an Airbus H125. The Robinson R22 is a popular light piston model widely used for flight training and private operations. Officials have not officially released the names of those killed.

What Happened

The two helicopters collided in the vicinity of the airport, though investigators have not confirmed whether the crash occurred in the air or on the ground. Emergency crews from the McMinnville Fire Department and the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene to secure the area and begin the initial response.

McMinnville Municipal Airport is a general aviation facility that serves private pilots, flight schools, and small charter operations. It does not have a control tower, which means pilots coordinate takeoffs and landings among themselves using a common radio frequency.

The absence of a control tower is common at smaller airports across the United States. Pilots operating at these fields rely on standard communication procedures and visual separation to avoid conflicts.

The Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have taken over the investigation. The NTSB typically leads inquiries into civil aviation accidents and will examine wreckage, maintenance records, pilot credentials, weather conditions, and any available radio or radar data.

A preliminary report from the NTSB usually appears within 30 days of a crash. A full report, which includes a probable cause determination, can take one to two years to complete.

Investigators will likely focus on several questions. Was there a breakdown in radio communication between the two aircraft? Did either pilot see the other before the collision? What role, if any, did weather or mechanical failure play?

The Aircraft Involved

The Robinson R22 is one of the most common civilian helicopters in the world. Manufactured by Robinson Helicopter Company in Torrance, California, the four-seat aircraft is used for pilot training, aerial tours, agricultural work, and personal transportation.

The R22 has been involved in a number of fatal accidents over the years, and the model has drawn attention from safety regulators. In 2016, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau published findings about main rotor blade separation incidents involving the R22. Robinson has made design updates and issued service bulletins over time to address safety concerns.

Despite the scrutiny, the R22 remains a workhorse of the general aviation fleet. Thousands are in service globally.

Reactions From the Community

McMinnville is a city of roughly 34,000 residents in Yamhill County. The airport sits near the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, which houses the Hughes H-4 Hercules, commonly known as the Spruce Goose. The museum is one of the region's best known attractions and draws aviation enthusiasts from around the country.

Local officials have not yet held a formal press conference, but statements from the airport and city are expected in the coming days. Flight operations at the airport may be limited while the investigation continues and the wreckage is removed.

Helicopter Safety in Context

Midair collisions involving helicopters are rare but not unheard of. Light aircraft operating in the same airspace, particularly near non-towered airports, face elevated risk when pilots do not maintain clear communication or visual contact.

The FAA has emphasized the importance of standardized traffic patterns and radio calls at uncontrolled fields. Pilots are trained to announce their position and intentions when approaching, departing, or operating in the pattern.

In recent years, the aviation industry has pushed for broader use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, or ADS-B, which allows aircraft to transmit and receive location data. The technology helps pilots see nearby traffic on cockpit displays, reducing the chance of a midair conflict.

Whether ADS-B data from the two helicopters will play a role in the McMinnville investigation remains to be seen.

What Comes Next

Investigators will continue to gather evidence at the crash site over the coming days. The identities of the victims will be released after their families are notified. Updates from the NTSB and FAA are expected as the preliminary findings become available.

For now, the McMinnville community and the broader aviation world are left waiting for answers about what caused one of the deadliest incidents at the airport in recent memory.
