Air Cambodia Joins Boeing Family With Major Order For Up To 20 737 MAX Jets Announced At Singapore Airshow

SINGAPORE – In a move that signals a bold new chapter for Cambodian aviation, Boeing and Air Cambodia officially unveiled a landmark agreement today, February 3, 2026, identifying the Southeast Asian carrier as the previously undisclosed customer for up to 20 of 737-8 MAX aircraft.

Announced on the opening day of the 2026 Singapore Airshow, the deal consists of a firm order for 10 aircraft with options for 10 more. Valued at approximately $2.4 billion at list prices, the agreement marks the first time a Cambodian airline will operate Boeing jetliners, representing a significant shift in a region traditionally dominated by European and regional platforms.

A Strategic Pivot for Growth

The order was originally finalised in December 2025 and had been listed as "unidentified" on Boeing’s Orders and Deliveries website until today's high-profile revelation. For Air Cambodia, the national full-service carrier, the transition to the 737 MAX 8 is a cornerstone of its rapid modernisation effort.

The airline, which currently operates a mixed fleet of ATR 72s and Airbus A320-family aircraft, plans to utilise the 737-8’s 3,500-nautical-mile range to launch new direct services to high-demand markets across North and Southeast Asia, including expanded routes to China, Japan, and India.

During the announcement ceremony, executives from both companies emphasised the economic and operational impact of the new fleet. Dr. David Zhan, CEO of Air Cambodia, highlighted the aircraft's efficiency as a catalyst for the airline's future.

“The 737-8 gives Air Cambodia the ideal combination of range, capacity and fuel efficiency to support our next phase of growth,” said Dr. David Zhan. “This investment – Air Cambodia's largest narrowbody purchase – will let us launch direct services to important markets across North and Southeast Asia, and offer competitively priced travel for passengers, while creating local jobs and training opportunities that strengthen our communities.”

Brad McMullen, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, welcomed the carrier into the Boeing operator community.

Order Specifications and Performance

The 737-8 is expected to be configured in a premium two-class layout with 178 seats, offering 20% lower fuel consumption and emissions compared to the older aircraft in the regional market. This order significantly boosts Boeing's footprint in Southeast Asia, where the manufacturer’s Commercial Market Outlook predicts a need for nearly 5,000 new aircraft over the next two decades.

Contextualising the Fleet Modernisation

The Boeing deal follows Air Cambodia’s existing commitments for COMAC C909 and C919 aircraft, suggesting a diverse, multi-pronged fleet strategy to capture both regional and medium-haul traffic. By introducing the 737 MAX, the airline is positioning itself to compete directly with low-cost and legacy carriers on lucrative intra-Asia corridors.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has also noted that the deal supports over 12,000 U.S. jobs, underscoring the industrial and diplomatic weight of the agreement as Cambodia strengthens its trade ties with the United States.
