United Flight 1509, flying from San Francisco (SFO) to Honolulu (HNL) on Monday, had to return to San Francisco mid-flight as a woman entered labor during the flight. The flight took off at 4:35 PM PDT and, about two hours later, began to turn around. The flight landed safely at 8:10 pm PDT. On the return "leg," the flight transmitted 7700, indicating an emergency was present on board, although the cause was not public for quite some time.

"United flight 1509 from San Francisco to Honolulu safely returned to SFO following a medical incident onboard," said United spokesperson Anoushah Rasta. "First responders met the airplane at the gate, and we made arrangements for the other passengers to complete their journeys as soon as possible."

The woman who went into labor appears to be fine, although there has been no update on her condition. UA 1509 had no disruptions on Tuesday, departing and landing on time.

Women going into labor onboard flights is more common than you may think. In January 2022, a woman flying on United from Accra (ACC) to Washington (IAD) gave birth mid-flight. In April 2021, a woman flying Delta Air Lines gave birth mid-flight between Salt Lake City (SLC) and Honolulu. On both flights, the final destination was reached, and no return was necessary.

This year, an Emirates passenger gave birth midway through a 12-hour overnight flight from Tokyo to Dubai in January, and just this past August, a woman gave birth on Air KBZ mid-flight between Tachileik (THL) to Yangon (RGN).
