Riyadh Air, the kingdom's newest carrier, has taken delivery of the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners from its Boeing aircraft order book, marking a major milestone ahead of the airline's planned commercial launch. The aircraft arrived at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, where they were greeted with an aerial escort by the Saudi Hawks aerobatic team.
The delivery marks a major milestone in Riyadh Air's development, a process that began in March 2023 when Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the carrier as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 strategy to diversify the economy and establish the kingdom as a global aviation hub. The airline is wholly owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the sovereign wealth fund that has played a central role in financing the country's economic transformation.

A Long-Awaited Arrival
The two Dreamliners touched down following ferry flights from Charleston and Everett respectively, with both aircraft arriving in tandem in Riyadh.
Riyadh Air has placed firm orders for 39 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for 33 more. The carrier has also signed agreements for 60 Airbus A321neo narrowbody jets, giving it a fleet plan designed to support both regional and long-haul operations from its Riyadh base.
The newly delivered aircraft wear the airline's distinctive livery, which features a deep indigo and lavender color scheme intended to set the carrier apart visually from established Gulf rivals.
Countdown to Commercial Flights
With the first Dreamliners now in Riyadh, the airline's focus turns to completing the remaining regulatory and operational requirements ahead of full commercial service. Riyadh Air has previously said it aims to connect Riyadh with more than 100 destinations by 2030 as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 aviation strategy.
Chief Executive Officer Tony Douglas, formerly of Etihad Airways, has assembled a leadership team drawn from across the global aviation industry. The airline has also signed partnership agreements with several established carriers, including Delta Air Lines, Singapore Airlines, China Eastern, Virgin Atlantic, and Turkish Airlines, helping lay the groundwork for its future international network.

Strategic Significance
The Dreamliner deliveries arrive at a moment of intense competition in the Gulf region. Riyadh Air is entering a market already served by Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways, each with established global networks and strong brand recognition. Saudi authorities have signaled their willingness to invest heavily to make Riyadh a competitive transfer point between East and West.
The carrier will operate alongside Saudia, the kingdom's existing national airline, which is undergoing its own fleet renewal and network expansion. Saudi officials have framed the dual-airline strategy as a way to serve different market segments and support broader tourism targets, which include attracting 150 million annual visitors by 2030.
Boeing, for its part, has highlighted the Riyadh Air order as a vote of confidence in the 787 program, which has faced production and quality challenges in recent years. The 787-9 variant offers a range of roughly 7,565 nautical miles and can carry between 250 and 300 passengers in typical configurations, making it well suited to the long-haul routes Riyadh Air plans to operate.
What Comes Next
Passengers can expect further announcements in the coming weeks regarding cabin interiors, service offerings, and the opening of ticket sales. The airline has previously teased a premium-focused product designed to compete directly with the leading carriers in the region.
For now, the sight of two Dreamliners parked in Riyadh signals that years of planning are giving way to operational reality. The final countdown to passenger service has begun.
