Operation Equine Lifeline reached its triumphant conclusion yesterday as the second of two Boeing 777 Freighters touched down at Liège Airport, successfully completing the evacuation of 147 world-class showjumping horses from the intensifying conflict zone in the Persian Gulf. Valued at an estimated $300 million in collective bloodstock, these elite athletes, including the prized mounts of German Olympian Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann, were successfully extracted through a high-stakes logistical corridor spanning road and air.
The mission, necessitated by the closure of Qatari airspace on February 28 following airstrikes near Al Udeid Air Base, represents one of the most complex animal transport operations in modern aviation history. With commercial traffic grounded at Doha’s Hamad International (DOH), the "Equine Pro" division of Qatar Airways Cargo was forced to execute a daring contingency plan: a 350-kilometer (217-mile) desert convoy to Saudi Arabia followed by a long-haul airlift to Europe.

The Desert Convoy and the Riyadh Pivot
Before the horses could take to the skies, they faced a grueling four-hour journey by road. A fleet of climate-controlled "horse floats" transported the animals from the Al Shaqab equestrian complex in Doha to King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Riyadh. This road transfer was the only viable exit route as regional tensions between major powers continued to threaten the safety of non-military flight paths over the Gulf.
Once in Riyadh, the horses were met by the specialized ground crew of Qatar Airways Cargo. The logistics were staggering: 147 horses, nearly 90 veterinarians and grooms, and over 30,000 kilograms of specialized tack and medical equipment.
“In challenging circumstances, we are incredibly grateful for the extraordinary efforts made to organise these flights at the earliest possible opportunity. The Doha Tours team, local authorities and Qatar Airways worked tirelessly to ensure the horses could leave as quickly and safely as possible,” stated a spokesperson for the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT).

The Boeing 777F was selected for this mission not just for its 102-tonne payload capacity, but for its sophisticated Environmental Control System (ECS). To ensure the horses remained calm and healthy, the cargo hold was divided into specific climate zones, strictly maintained between 53 Fahreneit and 59 Fahreneit.
The horses were housed in "triple-stall" jet stalls, padded, ventilated containers designed to keep the animals stable during takeoff and landing. Each stall accommodated three horses, allowing them to stand comfortably while preventing injury from sudden movement. Throughout the six-hour flight from Riyadh to Liège, specialized grooms provided constant hydration and hay, while on-board veterinarians monitored the animals’ heart rates and stress levels via portable sensors.

Official Statements and Regional Impact
The cancellation of the Doha leg of the LGCT has sent ripples through the international sporting world, but the focus remains on the successful recovery.
“Two horse flights from Doha have now landed back in Europe and we are delighted to confirm that all 147 horses are safely home,” the LGCT spokesperson confirmed.
A representative for the Doha Equestrian Tour added:
“Qatar continues to closely monitor the evolving regional situation, with safety and stability as the priority. While the main impact has been on airspace and international travel, the Doha Equestrian Tour remains operationally prepared to resume competition as soon as local authorities and relevant sports institutions allow.”

Operation Equine Lifeline
The following operations were exclusively chartered to ensure the safety of the stranded equine athletes.

As the horses begin their mandatory quarantine at the "Horse Inn" in Belgium, the aviation industry is reflecting on the sheer versatility of the Boeing 777F as a lifeline in times of geopolitical crisis. For now, the focus of the equestrian world shifts to the Miami Beach 2026 season, leaving the quiet stables of Al Shaqab to wait for a ceasefire that remains elusive.
