LAMEZIA TERME, ITALY – An easyJet Europe Airbus A320-200 was involved in a serious aviation incident on the morning of December 27, 2025, after suffering an uncontained engine failure during its descent into Lamezia Terme International Airport (SUF).

The aircraft, registered as OE-IVZ, was operating flight U23557 from Milan Malpensa (MXP) to Lamezia Terme with a standard complement of passengers and crew. According to initial reports and flight tracking data, the flight proceeded normally at its cruising altitude until the commencement of the descent phase.

Incident Chronology

The aircraft was descending through Flight Level 250 (25,000 feet) approximately 50 nautical miles north of its destination when the crew reported a catastrophic failure of the No. 1 engine (left-hand side).

The failure was characterised as uncontained, a rare and serious classification where high-energy debris from the engine’s internal rotating components penetrates the outer protective cowling.

08:13 CET: Flight U23557 departs Milan Malpensa.

09:20 CET: During descent (FL250), an uncontained failure occurs in the No. 1 engine.

09:25 CET: Crew declares an emergency and enters a holding pattern to conduct "Engine Fire/Failure" and "Engine Secure" checklists.

09:52 CET: The aircraft performs a successful overweight landing on Runway 28 at Lamezia Terme.

Emergency services were stationed along the runway as a precaution. Despite the severity of the engine damage, the aircraft landed safely, and all passengers disembarked via mobile stairs on the taxiway. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.

Technical Profile

The aircraft involved is a 10.9-year-old Airbus A320-214, originally delivered in February 2015. It is powered by two CFM International CFM56-5B4/P engines, a power plant known for its high reliability and extensive service history.

Investigation Status

The Italian National Agency for the Safety of Flight (ANSV) has been notified and is expected to launch a formal investigation. Preliminary visual inspections of the No. 1 engine reportedly showed significant damage to the turbine casing, consistent with an uncontained event.

In a statement, an easyJet spokesperson confirmed the diversion:

"EasyJet can confirm that flight EJU3557 from Milan to Lamezia Terme on 27 December was met by emergency services on arrival as a precaution following a technical issue with one of the aircraft’s engines. The aircraft landed safely and all passengers disembarked normally."

The aircraft remains on the ground at Lamezia Terme for technical evaluation and engine replacement. Aviation safety experts will focus on whether the failure originated from a fatigue crack in a turbine disc or a foreign object ingestion during the descent.
