Air Canada has officially entered a transformative chapter in its narrowbody operations as its first Airbus A321XLR successfully completed its maiden test flight earlier today in Germany. As of February 27, 2026, the aircraft, registered as C-GXLR (currently operating under test registration D-AVZG), lifted off from Airbus’s Finkenwerder facility in Hamburg for a flight lasting approximately three hours and twenty minutes. This milestone marks the final phase of preparations before the Canadian flag carrier takes formal delivery of the first of 30 ordered "Extra Long Range" jets this spring.
The maiden sortie follows a series of high-intensity ground tests, including a double-rejected takeoff (RTO) procedure completed earlier this week. For Air Canada, the A321XLR is not merely a fleet addition but a strategic pivot. With a range of approximately 4,700 nautical miles, the aircraft is designed to serve "long and thin" routes that were previously too small for widebody aircraft yet too distant for traditional narrowbody jets.

Redefining the Transatlantic Experience
The arrival of the A321XLR signals the introduction of widebody-level comfort on a single-aisle platform. Air Canada is configuring the aircraft with 182 seats, featuring 14 lie-flat Signature Class pods in a 1-1 configuration, a first for the airline's narrowbody fleet. The remaining 168 seats in Economy will feature the airline’s next-generation cabin design, including larger "XL" overhead bins and upgraded seatback entertainment.
Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Air Canada, highlighted the aircraft’s versatility during a recent briefing:
"The XLR enables us to grow into routes and markets where wide-body aircraft would be too big. It allows us to open up those routes and do it profitably."

A Disciplined Entry into Service
While the airline initially planned a sprawling network for the XLR, recent schedule filings indicate a more concentrated launch strategy. The aircraft will make its domestic debut on May 1, 2026, between Montreal and Calgary, serving as a proving ground for crew familiarization before transitioning to high-stakes international missions.
The inaugural international destination is now set to be Toulouse, France, on May 15, followed by a seasonal expansion to key European hubs including Berlin and Porto. Notably, the airline has adjusted its summer 2026 plans, removing the A321XLR from previously announced routes to Palma de Mallorca and Dublin to optimize fleet deployment amid ongoing industry-wide supply chain constraints.

As the airline navigates what CEO Michael Rousseau describes as a "transitional year," the A321XLR stands as the vanguard of Air Canada's future. By bridging the gap between short-haul efficiency and long-haul reach, the "game-changer" from Hamburg is poised to reshape the Canadian sky.
