A Silk Way West Airlines Boeing 747-8 freighter ended up at the wrong Texas airport last week, then declared a low-fuel emergency after air traffic controllers rerouted it toward its intended destination.

 

The incident, reported by multiple aviation news outlets, raised questions about how a long-haul cargo flight from Azerbaijan wound up hundreds of miles off course as it neared the end of a transatlantic journey.

 

What happened on the flight

 

The aircraft, a Boeing 747-8F operated by Azerbaijan-based cargo carrier Silk Way West Airlines, departed from Baku on a scheduled long-haul run. Its planned destination was George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (IAH).

 

Instead, the crew flew the jet toward Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), roughly 240 miles north of Houston. The aircraft was on approach to Dallas when the mistake became clear, and controllers redirected the flight south toward its correct destination.

 

By the time the crew turned the aircraft toward Houston, fuel reserves had become a serious concern. The pilots declared an emergency, telling air traffic control they had roughly 30 minutes of fuel remaining.

 

The aircraft landed safely at Houston without further incident. No injuries were reported, and the freighter was not damaged.

How the mix-up unfolded

 

Details on exactly how the crew ended up lined up for the wrong airport remain limited. Reports indicate the flight had been cleared for Houston, but the aircraft's routing took it toward Dallas Fort Worth. Whether the confusion stemmed from a programming error in the flight management system, a miscommunication with controllers, or another factor has not been publicly confirmed by the airline.

 

Airport mix-ups by commercial crews are rare but not unheard of. The Boeing 747-8F is the freighter version of the largest 747 variant ever built. It can carry roughly 137 metric tons of cargo and has a range that allows it to operate long-haul routes between continents without refueling. Silk Way West Airlines operates a fleet of these aircraft on cargo routes connecting Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

 

The Baku-based carrier has grown into one of the larger cargo operators in the region over the past decade, running scheduled and charter flights on behalf of shippers moving industrial equipment, e-commerce goods, and other freight.

In this case, the 747-8F crew avoided the worst outcome. The aircraft landed safely, no one was hurt, and the cargo reached Houston, even if it took a longer route than planned.
