United Airlines Is Now Flying Nonstop to Four European Cities No Other US Carrier Reaches

United Airlines has formally launched the most ambitious week of new route openings in its current summer expansion, kicking off nonstop services to four European destinations: Split, Croatia; Bari, Italy; Glasgow, Scotland; and Santiago de Compostela, Spain- that no other US network carrier serves directly. The four routes, all departing from Newark Liberty International Airport, began launching on April 30, 2026, and collectively represent the most concentrated package of exclusive transatlantic additions the Chicago-based carrier has made in a single summer season. For travellers on the US East Coast, they eliminate the European connections that previously made these destinations awkward to reach.

The Strategy

United's route selection strategy for summer 2026 is deliberate and commercially specific. Rather than adding frequency on already saturated corridors between major European capitals, the airline has targeted second-tier destinations where it faces no direct US carrier competition and where connecting traffic through European hubs has historically indicated latent nonstop demand.

Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, explained the aircraft deployment logic behind the approach with unusual candour:

“Even if I had the A321XLR today, I would not fly the XLR to any of those routes that we're flying the MAX 8 on. I view the MAX 8 as one unique asset, and I view the XLR as another unique asset.”

He added that the XLR will ultimately replace the Boeing 757-200: "The XLR is going to go in and replace the Boeing 757-200."

The result is a two-tier aircraft deployment across the four new routes, with the widebody Boeing 767-300ER assigned to the longer Adriatic and southern Italian services, and the Boeing 737 MAX 8 handling the narrower transatlantic distances to Scotland and Galicia.

America's First Nonstop to the Dalmatian Coast

Split, Croatia receives its first-ever nonstop service from the US starting April 30, with United operating three weekly flights connecting travellers to the Dalmatian Coast. Split serves as a gateway to popular islands such as Hvar and Brač, and the city itself is home to the ancient Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The flight utilises a "high J" 767-300 with 46 seats in Polaris business class, 22 seats in Premium Plus premium economy, 43 Economy Plus extra-legroom seats, and 56 seats in economy class. This premium configuration on a leisure-oriented route sends a clear signal about the passenger profile United expects to serve — travellers willing to pay a premium for the convenience of a direct connection to a destination they would otherwise reach only through a European hub change.

The passenger response, even before the route launched, was emphatic. One US and Croatian dual-citizen traveller wrote in an aviation forum:

“I've been wishing for this route for many years! I've been flying the Newark to Dubrovnik route since it launched in 2021, but Split is much closer to my home. Not only is this route more convenient for Americans who'll be making Split their base when visiting Croatia, but also for Croatians wanting to visit NYC! Already booked my May 2026 flight to Split.”

The Only US Gateway to Puglia

Bari launches on May 1 with four weekly flights. United becomes the only US carrier to serve southern Italy's Puglia region nonstop. The route opens direct access to Bari's historic Old Town, the Trulli dwellings in Alberobello, and ferry connections to Albania, Croatia, and Greece.

With this addition, United will operate up to 15 daily flights to six Italian cities during the summer season. Bari becomes the sixth Italian destination in United's network, following Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples, and Palermo, the last of which is also exclusively United among US carriers.

The Bari service uses the same premium 767-300ER configuration as Split, operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. For the Puglia region, which has seen rapid growth as a high-end tourism destination over the past decade, the arrival of a Star Alliance carrier offering onward connections across the entire United States is a commercially transformative development for local hospitality and transport operators.

A Route Restored After Seven Years

Glasgow begins daily seasonal service on May 8. This marks the only nonstop service between the US and Glasgow, restoring a route United previously operated until 2019. Glasgow holds UNESCO City of Music status and serves as a base for exploring the Scottish Highlands. United pairs this with year-round Edinburgh service, making it the largest US carrier to Scotland.

Unlike the Adriatic routes, Glasgow is served by the Boeing 737 MAX 8, a narrowbody that United has been deploying with increasing confidence on thinner transatlantic crossings, leveraging its range and fuel efficiency on routes where widebody economics would not work. The MAX 8 carries no lie-flat seats, offering Economy and Economy Plus cabins, which positions the Glasgow service at a fare point that broadens access beyond purely premium travellers.

Santiago de Compostela: History Made in Galicia

Santiago de Compostela, Spain, starts three weekly flights from Newark on May 27. This is the first regularly scheduled nonstop service between the US and the historic pilgrimage city, the endpoint of the famous Camino de Santiago.

The city's significance extends well beyond pilgrimage tourism. Santiago de Compostela's old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the broader Galician region draws substantial Galician diaspora visitors from across the Americas, and the city's universities and cultural institutions generate year-round demand that the new route will be positioned to serve from its May 27 debut.

Reykjavik Joins the Package from Dulles

While the headline announcement centres on the four new European cities served from Newark, United is simultaneously launching a fifth new international route that targets a different gateway. Reykjavik, Iceland, gains daily nonstop service from Washington Dulles starting May 21. United operates this capital-to-capital route, offering lie-flat business class seats. No other carrier provides lie-flat service on the Washington-to-Reykjavik corridor. The service uses the Boeing 757-200, United's long-range narrowbody workhorse for thinner long-haul routes.

2025 Routes Return Alongside the New Ones

United's 2025 summer expansion set a company record for the most new destinations launched in a single season. All nine routes return for 2026, several with earlier start dates that reflect growing demand: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia resumes three weekly flights from Tokyo Narita on April 30; Faro, Portugal restarts four weekly flights from Newark on May 15; Madeira Island, Portugal returns with three weekly flights from Newark on May 16, three weeks earlier than its 2025 debut; Palermo, Italy brings back three weekly flights from Newark on May 22; Bilbao, Spain resumes three weekly flights from Newark on May 30; Nuuk, Greenland returns with twice-weekly service from Newark on June 6, one week earlier than last year.

United carried 1.5 million passengers to Italy, Spain, and Portugal by August 2025, an 11% increase over the previous year.

The Largest Transatlantic Schedule in United's History

United offers customers more ways to explore destinations across the Atlantic this summer with the largest schedule, including nearly 770 weekly transatlantic roundtrips in summer 2026.

United will serve 36 European destinations in summer 2026, with 14 routes that no other US carrier operates. The breadth and exclusivity of that network, combining major hubs with uniquely positioned second-tier destinations, is the clearest expression yet of United's strategy to win transatlantic market share not through head-to-head frequency competition on the busiest routes, but through geographic uniqueness on the routes only United flies.

Looking Ahead

United's four new European destinations complete a summer 2026 transatlantic schedule that is, by any measure, the most geographically adventurous in the airline's history. The combination of exclusive market access, premium hardware on the longer routes, and a returning set of 2025 destinations that performed strongly in their debut season gives the carrier a compelling commercial foundation across the Atlantic. For travellers who want to reach Croatia, Puglia, Glasgow, or Galicia without a European connection, this week marks the moment those options finally became available on a direct flight from the US East Coast.
