Spirit Airlines Baggage Policy 2026: Don't Get Hit with the $99 Gate Fee

Spirit Airlines Baggage Policy 2026: Don't Get Hit with the $99 Gate Fee

Spirit Airlines operates on an "unbundled" model, which they’ve refined for 2026 into a series of fare bundles. Unlike legacy carriers, Spirit charges for almost everything beyond your seat. But if you know the rules, you can still fly for significantly less.

Here is the 2026 comprehensive breakdown of Spirit’s baggage policy.

The Golden Rule: The Personal Item

Every passenger is allowed one personal item for free. Spirit is notoriously strict about this; if it doesn't fit in the "sizer" box at the gate, you will be charged the airport rate (often $79+) to check it.

Item TypeMax DimensionsCost
Personal Item18 x 14 x 8 in (45 x 35 x 20 cm)Free
Carry-on Bag22 x 18 x 10 in (56 x 46 x 25 cm)Varies ($50–$100)

Pro Tip: As of 2025, Spirit has replaced its old bundles. The entry-level Value fare (formerly "Go") is the most restrictive and requires you to pay for bags separately. If you know you'll need a carry-on, it is almost always more cost-effective to book Premium Economy or Spirit First, which now include a carry-on bag, priority boarding, and reserved overhead bin space as part of the upfront price.

Checked Bag Fees & "Light" Weight Limits

Spirit’s checked bag weight limit is similar to most U.S. airlines, but fees for exceeding it can be more aggressive.

Standard Weight Limit: 50 lbs (22.6 kg)

Standard Size Limit: 62 linear inches.

2026 Pricing Tiers (Per Bag/One-Way)

Spirit uses "dynamic pricing," meaning the cost depends on your route and when you pay.

  • During Initial Booking: ~$50–$60
  • Before/During Online Check-in: ~$60–$75
  • At the Airport Counter: ~$79–$89
  • At the Gate: $99+

Overweight Fees

If your bag exceeds that 50-lb limit, the fees escalate quickly:

51–100 lbs: +$125 fee

Oversized baggage also incurs an additional charge:

63-80 linear inches (158-203 cm): +$150

Special items over 80 linear inches (203 cm): +$150

How to Get Free Bags on Spirit

While Spirit is famous for fees, they have introduced several ways to bypass them in 2026:

  • Free Spirit Gold Status: Gold members receive one free carry-on AND one free checked bag (up to 50 lbs) on every flight, plus free snacks and drinks (including alcohol).
  • Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard: Primary cardholders now receive two free checked bags on every booking made with the card, a major upgrade introduced in late 2025.
  • Military Appreciation: Active-duty U.S. military personnel (and their traveling spouse/children) receive two free checked bags and one free carry-on. For the service member, these can be added online via ID.me; family members should add theirs at the counter with a valid ID.
  • Fare Bundles:
    • Value: No bags included. Best for those traveling with just a personal item.
    • Premium Economy: Includes 1 carry-on bag and Group 2 priority boarding.
    • Spirit First: Includes 1 carry-on AND 1 checked bag, plus a Big Front Seat and Group 1 boarding.

Special Items: Sports & Families

  • Strollers & Car Seats: Checked free of charge (either at the counter or gate).
  • Bicycles: $75 flat fee.
  • Surfboards: $100 flat fee (up to 2 boards in one bag).
  • Golf Clubs/Skis: These count as a standard checked bag, but Spirit’s 50-lb limit still applies, so watch the weight of your heavy gear!
