Canada’s capital is feeling a distinct tropical breeze this morning, February 2, 2026, as Porter Airlines officially cements its status as the dominant carrier at Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW). With the recent inaugural flight to Miami and the imminent launch of service to Phoenix, the airline is redrawing the map for sun-starved travellers in Eastern Ontario.
Escaping the Canadian winter just became significantly easier. Following the successful launch of its Miami service on January 24, Porter is now counting down the days until February 7, when it will debut the first-ever nonstop connection between Ottawa and Arizona’s capital, Phoenix. These routes represent a milestone for the region, offering the only direct air links to these major U.S. hubs.
The expansion is more than just a win for vacationers; it is a strategic masterstroke fuelled by Porter’s growing codeshare partnership with American Airlines. By landing in Miami (MIA) and Phoenix (PHX), Porter passengers now gain seamless access to American’s massive network, unlocking dozens of onward destinations across the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Western United States.

A Commitment to Canada’s Capital
The "Porter-ization" of Ottawa has seen the airline grow to serve 26 nonstop routes from YOW this season, more than any other carrier. This aggressive growth reflects a long-term investment in the Ottawa-Gatineau market, utilising the fuel-efficient and passenger-friendly Embraer E195-E2 jets.
“The ongoing addition of nonstop routes from YOW reflects Porter's commitment to Ottawa-Gatineau,” said Andrew Pierce, Vice President, Network Planning and Reporting at Porter Airlines. “Canadians want to escape winter, and these in-demand routes provide more options and more sun for the region.”

Reviving Vital Connections
For Miami, the new service restores a vital link that had been missing for years. Local officials in Florida have been quick to praise the move, noting the economic impact of re-establishing a direct artery to Canada’s seat of government.
“I am thrilled that Porter Airlines has enlarged its presence at MIA by re-establishing nonstop air service between Miami-Dade County and Canada's capital city, which hasn't existed since early 2020,” stated Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor of Miami-Dade County.
In Ottawa, the buzz is equally high regarding the Arizona connection. Susan Margles, President and CEO of the Ottawa International Airport Authority, highlighted the novelty of the Phoenix route:
“Florida continues to be a popular destination for sun seekers and snowbirds from the Ottawa-Gatineau area, making the addition of service to Miami great news. The addition of Phoenix marks the first time YOW will be connected non-stop to Arizona.”

New Air Operations
The following operations utilise the Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, featuring Porter’s signature two-by-two seating configuration, ensuring no passenger is stuck in a middle seat.

The Porter Advantage
As the airline continues to take delivery of its 75-strong Embraer order, the passenger experience remains a core differentiator. Every traveller on these new transborder routes enjoys:
- No Middle Seats: A 132-seat, 2x2 cabin layout.
- Connectivity: Free, high-speed Wi-Fi for all passengers.
- Premium Amenities: Complimentary beer and wine served in real glassware.
- American Airlines Synergy: In Phoenix, passengers can connect to 36 additional destinations, including Honolulu, San Diego, and Tucson.
With the summer 2026 schedule already promising further expansion into Nashville and Boston, Porter’s ascent shows no signs of levelling off.
