JetBlue Is Adding 11 New Routes From Fort Lauderdale and Targeting 130 Daily Departures After Spirit Airlines Collapsed

JetBlue Airways has launched the most aggressive airport expansion in its 26-year history, announcing 11 entirely new nonstop routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport alongside significant frequency increases on existing services, a response triggered directly by the sudden and total collapse of Spirit Airlines on May 2, 2026. The announcement, which went live for booking on the evening of May 4, positions JetBlue to absorb a substantial share of the estimated 30% of Fort Lauderdale's traffic that Spirit represented, and marks a defining moment in the reshaping of South Florida's aviation landscape.

Spirit's Collapse and Its Scale

Spirit Airlines ceased all operations on May 2, 2026, cancelling every scheduled flight without warning and stranding thousands of passengers across its network. The carrier, which relied heavily on Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as its primary hub, collapsed after surging jet fuel costs, driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran, made continued operations financially impossible.

Spirit Airlines had a large presence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, accounting for nearly 30% of the airport's traffic. Spirit's closure removes nearly 2% of US domestic seats from the market in one fell swoop, according to schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

JetBlue wasted no time. Within hours of Spirit's shutdown, the New York-based carrier announced rescue fares, fare caps, and a network expansion that will fundamentally alter its position at the airport.

The 11 New Destinations From Fort Lauderdale

JetBlue will launch new nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and destinations across the US, Latin America and the Caribbean. Six new JetBlue cities: Barranquilla, Colombia; Baltimore; Cali, Colombia; Charlotte, NC; Columbus, Ohio; and Indianapolis.

New nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale to existing JetBlue cities: Nashville, Tennessee; Detroit; Houston; Chicago; and Ponce, Puerto Rico.

The specifics of launch dates and frequencies clearly set out the scale. New nonstop routes from Fort Lauderdale include Baltimore with three daily flights starting July 9, Charlotte with three daily flights starting July 9, and Nashville with three daily flights starting July 9. Detroit with two daily flights starting July 9, Houston with three daily flights starting July 9, Chicago with two daily flights starting July 9, and Ponce, Puerto Rico with one daily flight starting July 9. The two Colombian routes, Barranquilla and Cali, begin on October 1 and October 15, respectively, while Columbus, Ohio, follows in November.

Frequency Boosts on Existing Routes

The 11 new city additions are only part of the story. On high-demand existing routes from Fort Lauderdale, JetBlue is adding additional daily flights to Austin, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Dallas/Fort Worth, Raleigh-Durham, Santo Domingo, and Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

Combined, the expansion adds 27 daily flights, pushing JetBlue's Fort Lauderdale operation to nearly 130 daily departures this summer, more than 75% above its 2025 levels and the largest schedule the airline has ever run from the airport.

Marty St. George, President of JetBlue, explained the airline's intent without ambiguity:

“We're stepping up for Fort Lauderdale to ensure the availability of air service in this market. Our focus is simple: make it easier for customers to stay connected with the people and places that matter, while delivering the service, comfort and value they expect from JetBlue.”

Rescue Fares and Fare Caps for Stranded Spirit Customers

The network expansion was accompanied by immediate passenger relief measures. JetBlue is offering $99 one-way fares to individuals with proof of a valid Spirit itinerary for the same route for travel through Wednesday, May 6.

JetBlue capped all Blue Basic fares at $299 on nonstop routes to and from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan that Spirit previously operated, with the cap applying to new bookings made through May 8, 2026.

JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty was direct about the airline's commitment to the moment:

"South Florida is a key market for JetBlue, and we recognize this is a challenging moment for many travelers. Our focus is on stepping up in the near term by adding service, maintaining connectivity, and keeping fares competitive, so customers can continue to travel with confidence."

A Loyalty Status Match for Spirit Members

Recognising that Spirit's loyal customers now face the loss of accumulated status along with their airline, JetBlue has introduced a targeted loyalty bridge. Spirit Airlines Free Spirit Silver and Gold members can request a status match to JetBlue's TrueBlue Mosaic program, giving travellers access to many of the benefits that make the JetBlue experience stand out.

JetBlue acknowledged the emotional dimension of what Spirit's members are experiencing:

“We know many Spirit customers are feeling the loss of the loyalty they built over time.”

Support for Spirit's Employees

JetBlue extended practical support beyond passengers. The airline activated its jumpseat agreement for Spirit pilots and flight attendants who need to deadhead home following the sudden shutdown. JetBlue also announced it will open interview opportunities for qualified Spirit employees seeking new positions within the carrier, providing a direct pathway for experienced aviation workers entering an uncertain job market.

The Strategic Picture

St. George described Fort Lauderdale as the "third leg of the stool" in terms of the airline's route map, with its bases at Boston Logan International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport as the other two legs. JetBlue, as of Tuesday, planned to grow at Fort Lauderdale to about the size of its BOS base as gates become available.

The airline is also seeking space for a new BlueHouse lounge in Terminal 3 at Fort Lauderdale. With the addition of Cleveland, announced separately in March, JetBlue will have launched service to 21 cities and increased its daily flights by nearly 32 departures from Fort Lauderdale over the past year, further strengthening the airline's investment in building depth and connectivity in its South Florida focus city.

Wall Street analysts expect Frontier Airlines and JetBlue to be the largest beneficiaries of Spirit's closure due to their network overlap. With 130 planned daily departures, JetBlue is now firmly positioned as Fort Lauderdale's dominant carrier, a status that Spirit's sudden exit has placed within reach practically overnight.
