Bomb Threat Forces United Airlines Flight to Divert to Chicago

On February 21, United Airlines flight UA 1533 from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) experienced a severe mid-air incident when a bomb threat forced the plane to divert to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). While information remains limited, this is a breakdown of the event based on currently available details.

The Flight

United Airlines flight UA 1533 departed from EWR at 6:05 a.m. local time, destined for LAX with 202 passengers and crew onboard. Shortly after takeoff, reports were made about a possible bomb threat after a passenger wrote on the plane's bathroom mirror that it would blow up, prompting immediate action from the pilots. While the nature of the threat remains unclear, some passengers have released their own statements.

One passenger on the flight said: 

"I would say two hours in they said we were making an emergency landing in Chicago, they didn't say why. We couldn't get out of our seats so when they landed they said that someone had written on the mirror in one of the bathrooms that there was a bomb." 

Another passenger wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter:

"On a United flight from Newark to LAX someone allegedly went into the bathroom and made a bomb threat on the bathroom window (mirror) and now we've made an emergency landing in Chicago," He added, "We (were) forced to leave all of our stuff on the plane and have no idea what is happening next."

Obeying safety protocols by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the pilots notified air traffic control and decided to divert the flight to ORD. This decision, while causing inconvenience and worry for passengers, prioritized the safety of everyone onboard. As a major hub with extensive security measures, the crew and air traffic control (ATC) deemed ORD the most suitable landing location.

The flight landed safely at ORD around 7:44 a.m. local time, after which authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Chicago Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the bomb threat. While no official reports have been made, preliminary police reports have noted that a note was found in the plane's bathroom saying the plane would blow up. According to other news sources, K-9 units have been deployed, and they found a suspicious bag linked to a scent similar to the note. 

A bomb-defusing robot was deployed to move the bag to a secure location. Currently, police are questioning the passenger whose bag it is. However, several questions remain unanswered regarding the incident. The identity and motive of the individual who made the threat, and whether the threat was genuine or a hoax.
