AirAsia X is mapping a bold trajectory toward the United States East Coast, with New York emerging as the primary target following the carrier’s strategic restoration of services to the United Kingdom. Just days after opening bookings for its new London Gatwick route, the long-haul low-cost pioneer has signaled that its "virtual hub" in the Middle East will serve as the essential springboard for a trans-Atlantic leap.
The airline confirmed this month that it will officially return to London on June 26, 2026, ending a 14-year hiatus from the British capital. However, the ambitions of the newly unified AirAsia Group, which recently consolidated its short-haul and long-haul units, extend far beyond Europe. The focus has now shifted to the "Big Apple," a destination that has remained an elusive goal for the airline since its inception.

The Bahrain Bridge to the Western Hemisphere
Central to this expansion is the establishment of Bahrain as AirAsia X’s first global hub outside of Southeast Asia. By utilizing fifth-freedom traffic rights, the airline plans to connect its massive ASEAN network to Europe, Africa, and eventually North America. This "one-stop" strategy allows the carrier to bypass the range limitations of its current fleet while maintaining the low-cost structure that defines the brand.
Tony Fernandes, co-founder of Capital A and a key advisor to the expansion, outlined the broader vision at a recent press conference in Manama:
"The plan is to have many flights a day from ASEAN into Bahrain, and from Bahrain, we will build an airline that will fly to all over Africa and Europe."
The move to New York would likely follow a similar model, potentially utilizing a European or Middle Eastern stopover to bridge the 8,000-mile gap from Kuala Lumpur.

Fleet Evolution and the Narrowbody Future
In a surprising shift in strategy, AirAsia X recently announced the cancellation of its remaining Airbus A330-900neo orders. Instead, the airline is pivoting toward a fleet of high-efficiency narrowbodies, including the Airbus A321XLR. These aircraft are expected to be the workhorses for the next phase of expansion, providing the range and economics necessary to sustain long-haul routes with lower passenger densities than traditional widebodies.
Bo Lingam, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X, emphasized the importance of the London relaunch as a precursor to these global goals:
"Our return to London marks a significant milestone for AirAsia X and we're excited to commence our operations at London Gatwick this June. This new daily route will enable UK travellers to seamlessly and affordably connect to Bahrain, Asean and beyond through our extensive Fly-Thru connectivity spanning over 130 destinations worldwide."

Scheduled Operations
As the airline prepares for its June 2026 debut at London Gatwick, the initial flight schedule has been finalized. These operations provide the blueprint for the projected New York service, which industry analysts expect to be announced late in the fourth quarter of 2026.
| Flight No. | Route | Departure Time | Arrival Time | Duration | Operating Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D7 001 | Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Bahrain (BAH) | 22:00 | 00:40 (+1) | 7h 40m | Daily |
| D7 001 | Bahrain (BAH) – London Gatwick (LGW) | 02:25 | 07:25 | 8h 00m | Daily |
| D7 002 | London Gatwick (LGW) – Bahrain (BAH) | 10:25 | 18:55 | 6h 30m | Daily |
| D7 002 | Bahrain (BAH) – Kuala Lumpur (KUL) | 20:55 | 09:55 (+1) | 8h 00m | Daily |
With promotional fares for the London route starting as low as RM199 ($42 USD) for early bird bookings, AirAsia X is aggressively reclaiming its territory in the long-haul budget sector. If the Bahrain-London corridor proves successful, the jump across the pond to New York JFK or Newark remains the final frontier in the airline’s quest to become the world’s first truly global low-cost carrier.
