On the Morning of Tuesday, August 27th, 2024, two workers were killed and a third severely injured when a tire exploded inside Delta's main maintenance shop in Atlanta. While most details are yet to be released, the tire was being worked on after being pulled off an aircraft that came into Atlanta last Sunday night.

So far, known details include that this accident occurred in the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). Specifically, it occurred in the wheel and brake shop, a place where tires and their associated components are adjusted, fixed and, and inspected. The tire itself was from a Boeing 757 that had arrived from Las Vegas on Sunday night, and was being worked on at the time of the explosion.

The shrapnel from the tire fatally injured two of the workers in the area, and severely injured a third. While details specifically about what happened have not been released, the dangers of working around aircraft tires are a lot more hazardous than one might seem. Aircraft tires are pressured up to 450 psi with Nitrogen, making an any explosion a violent and sudden affair.

Delta released a statement later on Tuesday both confirming the accident and explaining their part in the ongoing investigation:

"The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

The Delta family is grateful for the quick action of first responders and medical teams on site. We are now working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened."

Multiple agencies including Delta, the FAA, and OSHA are currently investigating the incident, and more information will be added to this article as it becomes publicly available.
